§ 01The brief
The group's bookkeeper noticed that 12 checks to suppliers had cleared with new payees and much larger amounts. The originals had been taken from an outdoor mailbox.
§ 02What I did
- 1.
Matched each altered check against the original amount and payee from the company's records.
- 2.
Wrote affidavits for each check within the bank's deadline, with the supplier confirmations attached.
- 3.
Filed the CCS report and a postal inspection complaint, and moved the company to electronic supplier payments.
§ 03The outcome
The bank reimbursed the full $540,000 under its altered-item rules.
