§ 01The brief

A nephew noticed the client was short of money despite a good pension. He had been sending cash, cashier's checks and wires to 'release' a prize that kept growing.

§ 02What I did

  1. 1.

Went through three years of payments with the family and showed the client the prize letters were fake.

  2. 2.

Asked the bank to recall the most recent wire, sent ten days earlier.

  3. 3.

Filed the CCS and FAE reports and helped the family block calls from the numbers the scammers used.

§ 03The outcome

The recent wire returned $64,000. The earlier payments could not be recovered, but the client stopped paying.
