§ 01The brief

The client's daughter called me after finding wire receipts while helping with his taxes. He had sent 23 wires, mostly overseas, to a woman he believed worked on an offshore rig.

§ 02What I did

  1. 1.

Grouped the 23 wires by receiving bank and found four had gone to one US account.

  2. 2.

Sent the US bank a fraud notice with the full history, which led it to freeze the account as a likely money mule.

  3. 3.

Filed the CCS and FAE reports and helped the family set up account alerts.

§ 03The outcome

The US bank returned $260,000 from the frozen account. The overseas wires could not be recovered.
