§ 01The brief

A 'lawyer' had told the client she was the heir to a distant relative's estate. Every few weeks there was a new fee before the funds could be released. She had remortgaged her home to keep paying.

§ 02What I did

  1. 1.

Reviewed every payment and showed the client the documents were forged, which she needed to hear from someone outside the scam.

  2. 2.

Found that the last six payments went to one US account and sent that bank a fraud notice.

  3. 3.

Filed the CCS and FAE reports and referred her to a non-profit housing counsellor about the mortgage.

§ 03The outcome

The US bank returned $92,000. The rest had gone overseas years earlier. Most importantly, the payments stopped.
